JDIP Rehabilitation Works - Jacob's Hut, Milk River

Works on this project commenced November 2011.

This Jacob Hut to Milk River Project, a component of the Jamaica Infrastructural Development Program (JDIP) under Contract # RW043, spans approximately 22km of existing road way between Main St./Manchester Avenue and the community of Milk River in the South West quarter of Clarendon.  The route serves as the main means of access to several communities, a major high school (Garvey Messiah High School) and the world famous Milk River Bath.  This makes this length or roadway an important one in this section of the parish.

The focus of this project is the re-construction of the pavement section of the roadways including scarifying the existing surface and installing new sub base layer and base layer to meet specifications as well as the laying of 4.6km of 38mm thick Asphaltic Concrete and Application of 17km of Double Surface Dressing.  The Project also includes extensive bushing along the roadway and the cleaning of over 30,000m of side and earth drains.  There is an extensive focus on drainage works which, in addition to side and earth drains includes the construction of several new drainage items. Some of these items are Cross Drains, V-Drains, U-Drains, French Drains and new sections of Earth Drain.

The Project roadway has a high volume of vehicular traffic during peak hours. This poses an issue and impacts on productivity as well as employee and general public safety and hence requires a well organized and controlled traffic management plan as well as strict conformance to our safety policy.  Planning and scheduling activities mainly focused around drainage works are critical as these items of work will be affected mostly by the weather condition.

Surrey Paving and Aggregate has taken on, as part of our procurement phase, the task of crushing our own sub base and base material. Approximately 80% of the work force is expected to be acquired from communities along the work route as we continue to strengthen our community relations.

Scope of Work includes:

Laying of 50, 000 tons of Base Course

Layng of Sub base

Application of 4km of Asphaltic Concrete

Application of 17km of Double Surface Dressing

Construction of V-Drains

Construction of 200m of U-Drains

Cleaning 30km of Side Drains
